Some More Graphics
It’s good to see that the War Resisters League is still around. They were a great resource 30 years ago when we were protesting the Vietnam War. And yeah, I’m showing my age…
One of my favorite cartoonists is the ever-incisive (and refreshingly ironic) Tom Tomorrow.

More Quotes
“I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to - they’re here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. Whether it’s the fictition of duct tape or fictition of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up. Thank you very much. “
- Michael Moore, tonight at the Academy Awards, after winning Best Documentary for "Bowling for Columbine"
Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.
- H. L. Mencken
I’m saddened. Saddened that this president failed so miserably at diplomacy that we’re now forced to war. Saddened that we have to give up one life because this president couldn’t create the kind of diplomatic effort that was so critical for our country. But we will work, and we will do all we can to get through this crisis like we’ve gotten through so many.
- Sen. Tom Daschle (D- SD)

Some Antiwar Graphics
Here’s a great source of antiwar graphics to make into posters, stickers, whatever. Go to
http://www.anti-war.us/gallery/index.php hosted by Portland’s own PLAZM.
My favorite is the one below. You can go to the Guerilla Girls site at http://www.guerillagirls.com/ to some more of their work. I happen to particularly like this one, because it fits in with my view that testosterone is the root of all evil, not money. Money’s just a co-conspirator.

War Day
I was at the rally in Terry Schrunk Plaza yesterday afternoon. It was great to see so much energy, especially from the younger folks. While I was there, I ran into an old friend of mine, Brian Thomas who was there with his digital camera. He shot the photo above and has a picture page of yesterday’s actions, and other Portland protests.
Again, the Portland police used military tactics against civilians. Although they were fairly restained in their treatment of the protesters at first, when the local news was over and they weren’t as worried about being photographed, they started using concussion grenades, as well as pepper spray and beatings.
On Monday in Salem, Oregon State Senator John Minnis (R- Fairview) is introducing the draconian Senate Bill 742 which would make acts of civil disobedience punishable by 25 years to life in prison. This is blatantly unconstitutional. It defines many methods of protest as “terrorism”. Here’s a link to the full text, the part about protests are in Section 1.
Here is a great analysis of Bush’s postwar plans. And here’s another at Working for Change. In fact, you should take a look at their other columnists. Much food for thought!
Here’s the Citizen’s Declaration at MoveOn.org.

New World Odor
Well, it looks like Bush has his new war. This morning I saw a sign in the back window of a van that read: “Nuke Iraq, and while we’re at it, N. Korea, France and Germany”. Yep, it’s started.
I heard this morning a statement by an official in FEMA back east that in case of a “red alert” being declared, anyone expressing dissent can be charged with treason and anyone participating in a protest action will be deemed a terrorist. This means they can be held incommunicado and denied access to legal help. Just like the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. Book your “tiger cage” now!
Today, I am utterly ashamed to live in this country.
